The migration of date palms trees to New Caledonia

Science et changements planétaires / Sécheresse. Volume 16, Number 4, 241-6, Octobre-Novembre-Décembre 2005, Article scientifique

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Melica Ouennoughi, Daniel Dubost

Summary : The introduction of palm trees date palms in New Caledonia is linked to the deportation of Algerians during the anticolonial fights of 1871. Beyond technical or agronomic adaptations, this introduction shows the cultural importance, today we would speak of the sense of identity, palm plantations took on in the oases of the Maghreb. In fact, one realises that by reconstituting a space akin to their native land in New Caledonia, the people from the oases addressed an instinct for survival.

Keywords : date palm tree, New Caledonia, biodiversity, migration
