Development of a cotton growth simulation tool open to users’ expertise

Summary : Faced with the problem of assessing the impact of farmers’ nitrogen supply practices on cottonseed yield, Sodefitex is currently seeking solutions to improve the use of crop simulation models. Technical collaboration between research and development teams resulted in the design of an experimental COTONS ® model release which could be run using technicians expertise on soil and plant development. Diagnoses on available data and specific Senegalese crop conditions led to propose an hybrid version, bringing together the advantages of both standard and simple models releases used for production estimates at regional level. Technical options were then used for two current variety calibrations, and validation tests were carried out using three sites and four-year experimental data. The process seems promising for the setting up of a farming advice-oriented tool.

Keywords : vegetal productions, tools and methods
